Recognition of at least one year of the MD-PhD studies towards the FMH specialist titles

Following intense discussions and after a great amount of effort from our former board member colleagues (presided by David Winkler), at least one year of the MD-PhD studies was recognised by many of the FMH (sub)specialities. The most "recent" official statement dates back to the 8th of November 2006. Unfortunately several specialities have re-organised their curricula, effectively omitting once more the possibility for MD-PhDs to have their work counting towards their specialisation. After new discussion between the SIWF and the SMPA, conducted by Veronika Kana, the MD-PhD will be recognized as one year for every specialization by the SIWF. Currently 41 out of 46 different FMH certifications recognize the research time, but by the end of 2014 all will.

SMPA-APSA Survey on MD-PhD program

In an effort to promote the career vitality of all physicians and physician scientists, the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is jointly surveying current MD and MD-PhD program trainees to identify factors that either help or hinder their advancement in academic medicine as well as to gauge career desires of future physicians and physician-scientists. This initiative is partly in collaboration with the Swiss MD PhD Association (SMPA). By identifying these factors, we will be better able to advocate for changes that will help reduce the attrition of physicians in academic medicine as well as develop policy recommendations that would go toward making academic medical careers more appealing to future generations of physicians. Results will also be used to advocate for policies that will help ensure success in various specialties and career sectors. Both current MD-PhD-students as well as alumni are welcome to participate.
